Tour combinations for 2018

Below, you will find a few of our favourite combinations. The list is a selection only and many more options are possible. We have put in suggestions for how to combine these and indicated what MRT can book for you, and what you would need to book independently. Please note flight and train schedules (both those suggested and those booked for the group) are subject to change.

April

Palladian Villas (3–8 April 2018) – Gardens & Villas of Campagna Romana (9–14 April 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

8 April: The Palladian Villas group is due to fly from Venice at 17.30. Transfer with the group to Venice airport to catch an Alitalia flight to Rome at 19.40-20.40. Stay overnight near Rome Fiumicino airport, where you meet the Campagna Romana group at 14.10 on 9 April. You would need to book the Venice-Rome flight and Fiumicino hotel yourself. Gardens of the Riviera (11–17 April 2018) – Gardens & Villas of the Italian Lakes (19–25 April 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

17 April: The Riviera group is due to fly from Nice at 17.25. Fly with Alitalia from Nice to Milan Malpensa at 15.40-16.25. Spend 2 nights in Milan. Meet Italian Lakes group at Milan Linate airport at 15.05. You would need to book the Nice-Venice flight and Milan hotel yourself. We suggest the Rosa Grande Hotel.

Essential China (2–14 May 2018) – Samarkand & Silk Road Cities (15–25 May 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

14 May: Fly with China Southern Airlines from Shangahi Hongqiao Airport to Tashkent (via Beijing) at 11.50-19.10 (please note the group transfer will go to Pudong airport instead). Stay in Tashkent on the night of 14th & 15th May. The group arrives at 8.30am on 16th May. You would need to book your flight.

MRT can book an extra night on 14 May in Tashkent. Prices on enquiry. Accommodation in Tashkent is included from 2pm on 15th May.

Footpaths of Umbria (7–14 May 2018) – Gastronomic Veneto (16–23 May 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

14 May: Finish in Rome with the Umbria group. Stay 2 nights in either Rome or Verona. The train between Rome and Milan takes about 3 hours on the fast train. Meet Veneto group at the hotel in Verona on 16 May (afternoon). You would need to book your accommodation in Rome – we suggest the Residenza di Ripetta or MRT can book two extra nights in Verona. You would need to book the train yourself.

Tudor Power in South & West (8–13 May 2018) – Walking Hadrian’s Wall (14–20 May 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

13 May: Travel with the Tudor group, arriving in London by 4.30pm. Stay overnight in London. 14 May: Take the train from London Kings Cross to Newcastle (c. 3 hours) to meet the Hadrian’s Wall group at Newcastle station at 2.15pm. You would need to book your own accommodation. We suggest St Ermin’s Hotel close to where the Tudor coach will drop you. You can book trains online with National Rail.

June

Walking to Santiago (5–16 June 2018) – Art in Madrid (19–23 June 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

16 July: travel with the Santiago group to Santiago airport, arriving for check-in c. 8.45 am. Fly with Iberia at 10.25-11.40 from Santiago to Madrid. Stay 16th, 17th & 18th in Madrid. Meet Madrid group at the hotel on 19th June. You would need to book the flight yourself.

MRT can arrange extra nights in Madrid at the tour hotel. Prices on enquiry.

August

The Industrial Revolution (6–11 August 2018) – The Victorian Achievement (13–20 August 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

11 August: Finish at Birmingham New Street Station at 4pm. Train to Manchester (c. 1.5 hrs) and stay nights of 11th & 12th in Manchester. [Alternative suggestion – train to Shrewsbury - 1h 10 mins for a two night stay. Then train to Manchester (1h 20 m)].

MRT can book the extra two nights in Manchester. Prices on enquiry. You would need to book the train yourself.

Frederick the Great (13–17 August 2018) – King Ludwig II (20–25 August 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

17 August: stay 3 extra nights in Berlin (17th, 18th & 19th August). 19 August: fly with Air Berlin from Berlin to Munich at 10.15-11.25. Meet King Ludwig group at Munich airport (due to land at 12.00) to join the first visit en route to the hotel.

MRT can book the extra nights in Berlin (or Munich if preferred). Prices on enquiry. You would need to book the Air Berlin flight yourself.

September

Walking in Slovenia (3–10 September 2018) – The Imperial Riviera (10–16 September 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

10 Sept: ferry from Piran to Trieste at 11.30-12.00 (or a taxi would take less than an hour). Meet Imperial Riviera group at Trieste hotel. You would need to book the ferry/taxi yourself with Trieste Lines.

Civilisations of Sicily (17–29 September 2018) – World Heritage Malta (1–7 October 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

29 Sept: fly with Air Malta Catania to Malta at 22.25-23.05 (times TBC). There will be c. 7 hours between MRT’s flight from Catania and the flight to Malta. There are no left luggage facilities at Catania airport. The train station has lockers, but we would not necessarily recommend using them. Stay 29 & 30th Sept at the hotel in Valletta.

October

The Romans in Mediterranean Spain (1–7 October 2018) – Roman Italy (8–17 October 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

7 October: Stay overnight at Barcelona. 8 October: Fly with Vueling Barcelona to Rome 11.50-13.40 (or 09.40-11.30) to meet Roman Italy group at Fiumicino airport at 14.10 You would need to book the flight and Barcelona hotel yourself. We suggest the Hotel Condes de Barcelona.

Modern Art on the Côte d’Azur (18–24 October 2018) – Picasso in Spain (29 October–4 November 2018)

Suggested travel for combining these tours

24th October: stay extra night in Nice. 25th October: Fly with Air Nostrum Nice-Madrid 12.30-14.25. Stay nights of 25th, 26th & 27th in Madrid. 28th October: Fly with Air Nostrum Madrid-Málaga 16.10-17.25. Stay one night in Málaga before meeting the Picasso group at the hotel on 29th October.
