Music at home

posted on 09/04/20

Concert halls, opera houses and individual musicians the world over are responding to the lockdown by streaming past performances online, collaborating as part of ‘virtual ensembles’, and posting concerts from their homes on social media. Here are some of our favourites.

MRT has a long-standing relationship with London’s Wigmore Hall, and with many of the artists who perform there. A selection of their past live events are available to view on demand on the Wigmore Hall website. Hear Rachel Podger perform a Bach programme, or Stile Antico present a rich selection of Renaissance motets, The Castalian String Quartet with pianist Stephen Hough, or Christoph Prégardien’s interpretation of Schubert’s Winterreise.

Register on staatsoperlive.com to view past performances by one of the finest opera companies in the world. A different opera is streamed each day. We will share more opera at home in a separate newspiece, coming soon. Please contact us to register your interest in our tour, Opera in Vienna, in March 2021.

This most prestigious of UK venues is offering a free programme of scheduled online broadcasts via their YouTube and Facebook pages. In recent weeks, this has included the Royal Ballet’s performance of Peter & the Wolf from 2010 and Royal Opera’s Acis & Galatea from 2009. Next up is Cosí fan tutte on Friday 10 April. Visit the Royal Opera House website for full information and programme updates.

Visit the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s LPO Online page to explore a variety of recordings, playlist concerts introduced by musicians, and digitally-combined chamber performances created during lockdown. Hear Anne-Sophie Mutter and LPO soloists perform an excerpt from Beethoven’s String Quartet No.10 in E flat, recorded by the musicians individually from their homes. Stay updated with the latest offerings by following the LPO on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. See the LPO perform Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle on our tour Wagner’s Ring in London in February.

From their home to yours

Many musicians are presenting regular live performances from home via Twitter:

  • Igor Levit is giving daily evening concerts and fellow pianist Boris Giltburg is also streaming regular full-length live performances.
  • Pianist Tom Poster and violinist Elena Urioste are keeping spirits up by giving daily light-hearted mini-concerts from their home.
  • Once a day, Artistic Director of the Trasimeno Festival, and pianist, Angela Hewitt posts excerpts of favourite works and her memories of performing them.
  • Baritone Jamie Hall accompanies himself on piano in his short daily ‘bathrobe recitals’.
